Nussbaum is recognized as a top environmental performer and leader in sustainable operations.

September 25, 2024

HUDSON, IL—Nussbaum Transportation Services has received a 2024 SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPA announced the award on September 25, 2024, at a virtual press event with its SmartWay partners, key stakeholders, and media organizations.

Out of 3,859 truck carrier partners in the SmartWay program, Nussbaum was one of only 29 (top 1%) to receive this distinction. According to EPA, winners were chosen “based on exceptional environmental performance as demonstrated by their annual freight assessment and emissions tracking submissions.” EPA examined factors such as:

  • CO2, NOx, and PM emissions.
  • Evidence of freight sustainability leadership—“the ability to drive change, influence the industry, lead freight efficiency performance, and sustain freight environmental excellence.”
  • A history of timely, accurate, and high-quality data submissions from the carrier.

In 2023, Nussbaum reduced CO2 emissions by 29.26% (27,325 tons) compared to the industry average truck carrier, the equivalent of saving 3 million gallons of diesel fuel, powering 4,900 homes for an entire year, or charging 13 billion smartphones. Their strategy centers on fuel-efficient equipment and technology improvements (such as solar panels and aerodynamics) and driver habits (smoothness, use of cruise control, idle time reduction, etc).

“For 20 years, the SmartWay Transport Partnership has worked together with stakeholders in the freight industry to find innovative ways to reduce pollution from goods movement,” said Joseph Goffman, EPA Assistant Administrator of Air and Radiation. “We commend the innovation, drive, and collaborative spirit of our partners whose efforts are helping to meet the challenge of climate change and to create a healthier environment for us all.”

“The SmartWay program is an important forum for highlighting the hard work and innovation that drive our fuel-efficient practices,” said Doug Bradle, Chief Operating Officer at Nussbaum. “It’s not any one person who made this happen but the combined effort of our employee-owners working together. Thank you to the EPA for this recognition!”
