Nussbaum wins 6th consecutive and 12th overall award for leadership in fuel efficiency and sustainability.

April 17, 2025

HUDSON, IL— The editors of Heavy Duty Trucking have selected Nussbaum Transportation as an HDT Top Green Fleet for 2025, honoring its industry leadership in sustainability. This year, HDT also recognized Nussbaum as a Top Green Fleet “All-Star” for winning its twelfth overall award (tied for the most Top Green Fleet awards received).

Nussbaum’s strategy centers on optimizing fuel efficiency through equipment specs, technology, driver training, and rigorous maintenance practices. The results include:

  • Fleetwide 9MPG, compared to 8.3 best-in-class and 6.9 industry benchmark.
  • Fleetwide 11% idle time, including several 0% idlers (drivers who recorded no idle time while parked).
  • In 2024, reduced fleetwide tire consumption by 25% YoY and tire costs by $600,000 with a rigorous tire management program. This includes improved maintenance practices and pull points, 100% automatic tire inflation units on all trucks and dry van trailers, and 100% wide-base tires.
  • Savings of .87lb of CO2 per mile compared to the average carrier (in just one year of operations, this equates to 24,000+ tons!).
  • In 2024, out of 3,800+ truck carriers in the EPA SmartWay® Program, Nussbaum was one of 29 (top 1%) to receive the 2024 SmartWay Excellence Award.

In partnership with industry leaders, Nussbaum employs various equipment and technology enhancements to improve fuel efficiency:

  • Transtex aerodynamic package for trailers.
  • Detroit Air Suspension systems, Top Spoilers, and FlowBelow Aerokit on tractors.
  • Merlin solar panels on 100% of tractors.
  • Testing new products such as lithium-ion APU batteries, new steer & drive tires, larger cab extenders, mirror eye camera system and Idle Smart analytics.

“One of the things that struck us about our winners this year is that despite the current changes and uncertainty in the regulatory environment, these trucking fleets are pursuing sustainability because they believe it’s good for business and it’s the right thing to do,” explained HDT Editor and Associate Publisher Deborah Lockridge.
